Maya's dream project to open a new world for the disabled
|
LUCKNOW: A visually challenged news-reader in an electronic channel. One with hearing impairment in a newsroom or a boardroom...
Even
those blessed with the highest degree of optimism, will find it tough to conjure up a scenario which could become a reality within next three years. The dream project of Mayawati government -- a university for the disabled -- slated to take off in July 2009, hopes to open a whole new world to the marginalised section by providing them with the perfect professional launching pad.
The courses offered include graduation, post-graduation, diploma or doctorate in humanities, music, computer, science, information technology, vocational training, science and technology, commerce, management and mass communication, to the disabled.
The segment, as per the charter, shall form 50% of the minimum strength in an academic session, though the number can be as high as the demand. The brochure guarantees a disabled-friendly campus with specialised facilities. While other supportive aids -- wheel-chair, crutches, tricycle, hearing aids, walking sticks, even fabricated limps will also be on the house for candidates.
According to official estimates, 2% of the total population in the state is handicapped. This number works out to be 35 lakh, says deputy director in the department of handicapped welfare, SK Shrivastava. The reserved quota for disabled in the Dr Shakuntala Mishra UP Handicapped University (DSMUPHU) has beneficiaries from four categories of disabilities -- orthopaedic, visual, hearing and mental disabilities, he said. The university, he said, with its unique features is expecting a big draw from not only Indians but students from neighbouring countries as well.
Guidelines issued to the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam, the body entrusted with the task of constructing the university and hostels in over 71 acres on Mahona road, are most specific. The entire constructed space will be barrier free with handicapped friendly features like ramps, special lifts with audio and visual signals for each floor, special toilets with doors wide enough for a tricycle to pass, lower latches and sinks, and corridors having a running length for parallel rods for support. Even hostels, apart from four hostels exclusively for the physically challenged, have been designed in a similar manner to enable the physically challenged freely visit and interact with their normal counterparts, the officer said.
The first lesson we want for handicapped students here is adaptability and assimilation with the normal segment. This explains why the university provides for admission of normal students as well, even though the first priority is disabled candidates, said Shrivastava.
The state government proposes to rope in experts from National Institute for Orthopaedics Handicapped, Kolkata, National Institute for Mentally Handicapped, Hyderabad, National Institute for Visually Handicapped, Dehradun and National Institute for Hearing Handicapped, Mumbai for coordination, cooperation and expert advice, Shrivastava said. In fact, the university could also have faculty drawn from these institutes, he hinted. This apart, in times to come DSMUPHU also proposes to set up its own Braille press on Mahona road to cater to the visually challenged students, he added.

Google Search Wiki
|
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/searchwiki-make-search-your-own.htmlOnce again, my PLN (personal learning network) has alerted me to something VERY interesting. (Thanks, @AngelaMaeirs!) A google search wiki. Imagine if you could perform a search, arrange the results according to the way YOU want them, and even leave yourself notes about the sites you've found. You can even remove sites from the list. There's more, too. Check out that blog post above and watch that demo video. Very nice!!

The power is within YOU
|
The power is within YOU its you who can change. The moment when you are clear about it, circumstances get eased. Because at this moment the confusing inside you does not. Try to find time for the 'self' talk talk talk talk talk be clear, stop getting carried away with fluttery talks. If these talks move you from within then you are not happy from within. Because you are not stable! You are always on the move changing yourself. Get grounded realize yourself and your potential. Be brave and move ahead.
The power is within YOU and you can make the difference.
For love,
Anand

Original song: "MUNGU AKUBARIKI (ANGELS OF AFRICA)"
About this category: Learning & Education
|

Listen online: http://ABC4All.net/poetry.htm
ABC4All Mentor Clarita Zarate (USA) graciously shares an original inspired song written and created with
Music by Barry Finnerty!
Clarita Zarate describes the evolution of "MUNGU AKUBARIKI (ANGELS OF AFRICA):
"I wrote and recorded this around 2004 along with another song, "Jambo." Mungu Akubariki means "God bless you in Swahili". I wrote it for Ben Omondi and the orphans in Kenya. I sent him a copy and one to Enoch, a TIG member. I also sent one to "To love children," I think his name is Dave, and he loved it.
"I found the lyrics for the song. Now what is happening is that we are taking the old music track and recording new vocals on top using the lyric sheet. Barry is now putting harmonies on to my vocals and next step is mixing."
MUNGU AKUBARIKI (ANGELS OF AFRICA)
I LAY IN BED AND CLOSED MY EYES
I THOUGHT THAT I WAS DREAMING
NOW I STAY AWAKE EACH NIGHT
TO HEAR THE ANGELS SINGING
MUNGU AKUBARIKI MUNGU AKUBARIKI
GOD BLESS THE ANGELS OF AFRICA
MUNGU AKUBARIKI MUNGU AKUBARIKI
GOLDEN ANGELS DRAPED IN WHITE
I ASKED THE MAN WHO MADE THIS LAND
TO SET MY PEOPLE FREE
YOUR PRAYERS THEY WILL BE ANSWERED SOON
THE ANGEL SANG TO ME
(CHORUS)
DON'T LET THIS WORLD BRING YOU DOWN
HOLD YOUR HEAD UP RISE ABOVE
THINK OF THEM AND SING THIS SONG
IT WILL FILL YOUR HEART WITH LOVE
(CHORUS)
Words by Clarita Zarate
Music by Barry Finnerty and Clarita Zarate (USA)

[TIPS] This is just.. Surreal
|
This is just too strange to wrap my mind around. Today is my last day with the IU. At close of business today I will be retired. Holy cow! Where did the time go? There are still so many things that I’ve not yet done. There is still so much to learn. How did it come to this? ;-) If you’re interested, I am not going to disappear – at least not for a few years (Good Lawd willin’ and the cricks don’t rise). I’ll be working with the Classrooms for the Future program in PA at least 10 days a month. And I will continue to do workshops, etc for as long as I’m being asked to do so. And I plan to continue with this blog. This is an effort of pure joy for me. Its not work. I’m resisting the temptation to wax philosophical. It’s a strong urge, but one that I’ll save for a bartender somewhere. :-) I’m going to be leaving for a week’s vacation on Tuesday, so this blog will be quiet during that time. Don’t unsubscribe just yet. After that you wont be able to reach me via the CAIU email address. You’ll have to use my gmail address. And those of you who receive my tips via email – you’re going to HAVE to learn to use RSS. You can do it. I KNOW you can. So, the next time you hear from me (unless I just HAVE to share something else today) I’ll be a “retired” man. A retired, LUCKY man.

[TIPS] 3D Virtual Rome
|
http://earth.google.com/rome/ How’s this for the power of Personal Learning Networks? This morning while waiting for a meeting to start, I was invited in to a group chat in skype by a woman who was doing a workshop with some college sophomore education majors. She asked our group if they would be available to speak to this class about the need for tech integration. Several of us did. But while we were waiting, Justine Kobeski, one of the CFF TIMS reps, dropped that url into the chat. Students can now view virtual Rome is an amazing way. As I explored it ( Open Google Earth and select "Ancient Rome 3D" in the Gallery layer) I kept thinking, “If we are teaching about Ancient Rome in our schools today, and were NOT using this tool, then isn’t that now unacceptable? Haven’t we finally gotten to the point that we can expect that this – even DEMAND it?” Harsh words, I know. But, this is NOT business as usual in our schools. If the current global economic meltdown and the election of our new President aren’t enough to convince us then I don’t know what WOULD be enough. I’m reminded FREQUENTLY of this post by Karl Fisch: http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/2007/09/is-it-okay-to-be-technologically.html. He asks, Is it oaky to be technologically illiterate in today’s world? Hmmm.... THIS post sure took an interesting urn, didn’t it? :-)
